We would rather keep a tree than remove it

Our aim at TR Trees is to provide customers within the TR postcode with unrivalled tree care and vegetation management, using modern working practices that are safe, efficient and cost effective.

Retaining a tree is the primary aim if it is in a suitable position, and a reduction is often a better way to lower the risk than a removal. When a tree does have to come out, we say why, we do it safely, and we suggest what should go back in its place. The work is done to British Standard 3998 with the timber and brash dealt with, and where we can use one of our cranes the job takes a fraction of the time.

See what a tree or hedge job takes off

Pick the tree or hedge, set it up roughly as it is, and the drawing shows what would come off, with advice that changes for each species. When it looks right, send it to us as a quote request.

Quercus robur and Quercus petraea. Takes a moderate reduction.

What needs doing

The outer crown is pruned back to growth points, so the tree ends up smaller but still looks like itself.

The tree now

After the reduction

A mature oak is often the most valuable tree on a property, for wildlife and for the look of the place. Reductions are kept modest and repeated on a cycle rather than done hard once. Oaks with cavities and loose bark are prime bat roosts, so we look before we climb.

Best time: Late autumn to late winter, once the leaves are off, or in high summer when the tree is in full leaf.

Avoid: Spring, while the buds are breaking, and the weeks after. Oak recovers slowly from big wounds, so cuts are kept small and back to a growth point.

Trees in a conservation area or under a Tree Preservation Order need permission or six weeks’ notice to the council before any work. We check for you and handle the notice.

Between March and August we check for active nests, and mature trees with holes, cracks or loose bark are checked for bats before anyone climbs.

A slight taper lets light reach the bottom, so the base stays green instead of going bare.

Laurel takes a hard reduction well and comes back from bare wood. Big leaves look tidier cut with secateurs or a sharp blade than shredded with a trimmer.

Best time: late winter or after the spring flush.

Between March and August, check for active nests before any hedge is cut. Damaging one is an offence, so we check first and leave any hedge that has birds nesting in it.

The crane difference

Big trees lifted out, not dragged through the garden

We started using cranes and HGVs in 2022 after finding that ordinary tree surgery vehicles were not up to removing large trees. Where we can set a crane up, sections are lifted straight over the house to the lorry, the lawn and borders stay untouched, and time on site normally drops by around three quarters. An 18 tonne lorry with a 10 tonne payload means we stay loading instead of leaving to tip.

Free tree health check

Worried about a tree? We will come and look for nothing

A free, no obligation health check anywhere in the TR postcode. A light prune or removing dead wood can be the difference between a tree living on safely and coming down in the next storm, and small remedial work is always cheaper than the clean up. It is an overview, not a formal survey, and we say so.
